Flake & Chip Epoxy Systems

There are two ways to broadcast vinyl flake: partial and full rejection. In a partial broadcast, flake is sprinkled lightly onto the base coat to create a scattered, speckled look with the base colour showing through in between. In a full-rejection broadcast, flake is thrown onto the wet base coat continuously until the coat literally can't absorb any more — you broadcast to rejection, meaning you've added all the flake the surface will take.

Full-rejection broadcast is what we install on every job. The result is complete, wall-to-wall coverage with no bare spots or colour gaps. Once cured and scraped flat, the flake layer creates a consistent, dense texture that hides minor surface variations and scuff marks between cleaning sessions. The topcoat goes over a fully flaked surface rather than a mix of flake and bare epoxy.

Full-rejection systems also perform better over time. The dense flake layer provides more grip than a partial flake surface, and when the topcoat eventually shows wear in high-traffic paths, the flake layer beneath it maintains traction. A partial broadcast floor with worn-through paths can become slippery. A full-broadcast floor stays grippy even after years of use.

Vinyl flake blends are available in dozens of colour combinations, from neutral greys and beiges to bold colour mixes. The flake chips themselves are thin coloured vinyl pieces available in different sizes — typically 1/16", 1/4", or 1/8" — and the blend is a mix of multiple colours in a single bag. The size of the chip affects the texture and visual character of the finished floor.

Smaller chip sizes (1/16") create a finer, more uniform look. Larger chips (1/4") create a more pronounced texture and a bolder visual effect. Most residential garage floors use a 1/4" or blended chip for good traction and visual coverage. Interior spaces — basements, rec rooms, commercial offices — often use a smaller chip for a more refined look.

We always bring physical flake samples to the quote. Colours look very different on a screen than in person, and in different lighting conditions in your actual space. We lay samples on your floor so you see exactly what the blend will look like at scale before any coating goes down.

After the flake layer is scraped flat and vacuumed, the polyaspartic topcoat goes down as the final wear surface. This is the layer you actually walk and drive on — everything beneath it is protected. The topcoat's hardness, UV stability, and chemical resistance determine how long the system looks good and holds up.

We use aliphatic polyaspartic topcoats on every flake install. Aliphatic resins are UV-stable, which means they won't yellow or chalk when exposed to sunlight through garage door openings or windows. Standard aromatic epoxy finishes — common in hardware-store kits — yellow noticeably within one season of sunlight exposure. On a grey and beige flake floor, that yellowing affects the entire visual character of the floor.

Polyaspartic topcoats also cure faster than standard epoxy (2–4 hours to light traffic at 15°C+), reach higher surface hardness (75+ Shore D vs. 65–70 for standard epoxy), and perform better in cold temperatures — important for Kamloops garages where slab temperature can be near freezing during late fall installs.
